Nigerian Afro-pop star Yemi Alade has revealed that a much-anticipated collaboration between her and fellow singer Tiwa Savage is unlikely to happen, citing a desire to avoid unnecessary controversy and media tension.
Speaking on the “WithChude” podcast, Yemi Alade stated that while she supports the idea of women uplifting one another in the music industry, working with Tiwa Savage might not be a good idea because of the drama that often follows.
In her words, “I’d rather stay clear; I don’t want problems in my life. There is no issue at all. The thing is, most fans and the media tend to stir waters that are supposed to be still. There is literally no problem.”
The award-winning “Johnny” crooner, who has collaborated with several female artistes over the years, stressed that her decision is not based on any personal disagreement but rather a precaution to avoid the kind of negative attention that fan rivalry and media narratives can bring.
The comments have reignited discussions online, as many fans have repeatedly called for a collaboration between the two powerhouse performers, viewing it as a significant moment for women in the Nigerian music industry.
However, both artistes have had a history of tension. In December 2018, Yemi Alade appeared to throw shade at female entertainers who “deceive fans by enlarging their buttocks” in pictures shared online. Although she did not mention names, the post came shortly after Tiwa Savage uploaded curvy photos on Instagram.
Tiwa, in response, made a subtle remark on her Instagram page that read, “Don’t start a war you can’t finish.”
Since then, the two have maintained a professional distance, with both focusing on their respective music careers and international projects.
Despite the fans’ ongoing hopes, Yemi Alade’s recent statement suggests that a joint track between the two leading ladies of Afrobeats may not happen anytime soon.
