South Africa’s Banyana Banyana secured their spot in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semi-finals with a gritty 4-1 penalty shootout victory over Senegal on Saturday at Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, Morocco.

The quarter-final clash, which ended goalless after normal and extra time, showcased South Africa’s resilience as they outclassed Senegal in the decisive shootout. Now, the stage is set for a blockbuster semi-final showdown with arch-rivals Nigeria’s Super Falcons on Tuesday, 22 July 2025.

The Super Falcons stormed into the semi-finals with a commanding 5-0 thrashing of Zambia’s Copper Queens on Friday, maintaining their flawless tournament record. Nigeria have been a force to be reckoned with in Morocco, netting eight goals without conceding in four matches—a testament to their formidable attack and ironclad defence.

This highly anticipated semi-final reignites a fierce rivalry.

In their last encounter at WAFCON 2022, also in Morocco, South Africa edged out the then-defending champions Nigeria 1-0, a result that avenged their painful defeat to the Super Falcons in the 2018 final. With history fuelling the stakes, both sides are poised for an epic battle.

Elsewhere, Ghana’s Black Queens will face hosts Morocco in the other semi-final, promising another thrilling contest on the same day. As the tournament reaches its crescendo, all eyes are on Casablanca for a clash that could define the path to WAFCON glory.
