A male student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has died after reportedly jumping from the third floor of a private lodge near Royal Kitchen Junction, Ifite-Awka, in Anambra State.
The tragic incident occurred late Thursday and has left the university community in shock. According to eyewitnesses, the student plunged from the balcony of the three-storey building after allegedly consuming a substance suspected to be the notorious crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as “mkpurummiri”.
“We suddenly heard a loud thud yesterday evening,” said a resident who lives nearby. “When we rushed out, we found him lying in a pool of blood. He was still breathing faintly, but things quickly took a turn.”
Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, the student was confirmed dead shortly after arrival. His identity is being withheld pending official communication with his family.
Sources revealed that the student was a tenant in the building and had taken the suspected substance alongside his roommate, who was later found in an incoherent state and is now in custody.
“The roommate was found in a terrible condition and couldn’t even speak clearly,” another source added. “It’s believed they both consumed the substance before the incident. Authorities are waiting for him to stabilise before conducting a full interrogation.”
Confirming the incident, Chief Safety Officer of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Ken Chukwurah, clarified that the tragedy occurred off-campus.
“We are still investigating to be sure of what happened, how it happened, and the proper identity of the victim,” Chukwurah stated. “It happened in a private lodge outside the school, and we don’t have control over who is admitted to such lodges.”
