A United States lawmaker has sharply criticised former Kano State governor and New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, over his recent comments regarding allegations of a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria.
The legislator, speaking through a statement obtained by Politics Nigeria, condemned Kwankwaso’s remarks as “deeply irresponsible” and “divisive”, warning that such statements risk inflaming religious tensions at a time when unity is urgently needed.
The U.S. official emphasised that Nigeria’s challenges with insecurity and communal violence are complex and multifaceted, urging political figures to focus on promoting peace and constructive dialogue rather than “reckless rhetoric”.
Kwankwaso has faced growing backlash since reports surfaced of his comments, which critics argue downplay attacks on Christian communities in parts of the country. Human rights advocates have called on Nigerian authorities to take such concerns seriously and ensure accountability for all acts of violence, regardless of religious affiliation.
Meanwhile, political observers note that the controversy could strain Kwankwaso’s standing both domestically and internationally, particularly as global attention intensifies on Nigeria’s human rights record and efforts to combat religious persecution.
