A military airstrike in Yauni community, Zakka ward of Safana Local Government Area of Katsina State, has tragically killed six members of a family. The incident occurred amidst local government elections on Saturday, according to local sources.
The airstrike followed a gun battle between security personnel and bandits in Zakka village. Three security personnel, including two police officers and a member of the Community Watch Corps (CWC), were killed in the initial exchange. The bandits had reportedly planned to attack voters in the village, but security agents intervened.
A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, told Daily Trust that a military fighter jet, likely deployed as reinforcement, subsequently dropped a bomb on Yauni community, south of Zakka. This resulted in the deaths of six family members and injuries to one woman.
This is not the first such incident in Katsina State. In July 2022, at least two people were killed in Kunkunni village, also in Safana LGA, in a similar accidental airstrike.
Daily Trust’s attempts to obtain comments from the police and military regarding the latest incident were unsuccessful.
