President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate launch of free healthcare for low-income retirees under Nigeria’s Contributory Pension Scheme.
He described the initiative as “a matter of dignity and basic protection for those who gave their active years in service”.
The directive followed a briefing at the State House by the Director General of the National Pension Commission, Omolola Oloworaran. According to a statement signed by the President’s Special Adviser, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu also insisted on fast-tracking long-overdue pension adjustments and introducing a minimum pension guarantee.
“The President further mandated the PenCom DG to urgently resolve the longstanding police pension issue,” Onanuga noted. “He emphasised that police officers who risk their lives for the country must be able to retire with peace of mind and a sense of honour.”
The Commission’s DG also updated the President on other reforms designed to protect pensioners’ savings against inflation and economic shocks. Among the proposals is the plan to allow Nigerians in the diaspora to contribute in foreign currencies.
“President Tinubu strongly supported these reforms,” the statement added. “He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive growth and to ensuring no pensioner is left behind.”
The briefing also touched on broader pension initiatives aimed at expanding coverage and improving retiree welfare under the current scheme.
