President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, describing him as a pride of the accountancy profession and commending his integrity, professionalism, and application of sound financial principles in governance.
According to a statement by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Ismail Isah, the President gave the commendation while receiving a delegation from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) at the State House, Abuja, shortly after the 55th Annual Accountants’ Conference.
The delegation, led by ICAN President Mallam Haruna Nma Yahaya and IFAC President Mr Jean Bouquot, met with the President to reaffirm the profession’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and national development.
President Tinubu lauded the accounting profession for its vital role in driving economic reforms and promoting fiscal discipline, describing accountants as indispensable partners in Nigeria’s pursuit of sustainable development.
“The accountancy profession represents transparency and information disclosure. A balance sheet must be definite, sure, and sustainable. I’m proud of the great minds working with us — including the Governors of Kogi and Jigawa, and the Accountant General of the Federation — who are transforming theory into practice,” he said.
Tinubu noted that Governor Ododo, a Fellow of ICAN, has demonstrated exemplary leadership through prudent financial management and accountable governance in Kogi State, embodying the values of discipline and transparency the profession upholds.
He also commended ICAN’s collaboration with international bodies such as IFAC and its contributions to tax and fiscal reforms in Nigeria.
The President assured that the Federal Government would carefully consider ICAN’s proposed amendment to its establishment Act, emphasising that “accountability is the question, and transparency will be the answer to many problems.”
He urged ICAN to continue promoting high professional standards to strengthen the nation’s economy while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to policies that foster transparency, fiscal responsibility, and efficient resource management.
Also present at the meeting were Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi, ICAN Vice President Queensley Sofuratu Seghosime, Past President Chief Felix Kolawole Bajomo, and ICAN Registrar/Chief Executive Dr Lanre Olasunkanmi.
