President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency over the nation’s security training institutions, citing the dire condition of facilities used by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other internal security agencies.
The President said the move was essential to restore the effectiveness and credibility of the country’s security apparatus, as many training centres have become outdated and unfit for purpose.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, who chairs the National Economic Council (NEC) ad-hoc Committee on Revamping Security Training Institutions, disclosed the development during an on-site inspection of facilities in Lagos.
He was joined by Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, the committee’s secretary and former Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Usman Baba, as well as Assistant Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu, who heads the Special Protection Unit (SPU).
According to Governor Mbah, the committee has been given 30 days to submit a comprehensive report to the National Economic Council for immediate implementation.
