Human rights activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, has filed a ₦500 million lawsuit against the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police for allegedly declaring him “wanted” without due process.
In the suit lodged before the Federal High Court in Lagos, Sowore contends that the police’s action amounted to defamation and a gross violation of his fundamental rights. He is demanding ₦500 million in damages and a public apology to be published in several national newspapers.
Sowore, who is also the convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, described the police declaration as “reckless, baseless, and politically motivated”, insisting that no criminal charge has ever been filed against him in relation to the allegations.
The activist’s legal team argued that the police acted outside their powers and failed to adhere to established procedures before branding him a wanted person. The case is expected to test the boundaries of police authority and the protection of individual rights under Nigerian law.
