The Labour Party (LP) has formally disassociated itself from its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, in a significant shift in its political strategy.
At an emergency National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja on Monday, the party unanimously declared Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed as its “sole and authentic” presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
In a statement delivered by LP National Chairman, Julius Abure, the party leadership announced its decision to part ways with individuals it accused of prioritising personal political ambitions over the unity and objectives of the party.
Abure explained that the move followed months of unresolved internal conflicts, allegations of anti-party activities, and public criticisms levelled by both Obi and Otti against the party’s leadership.
“Today, we reaffirm our commitment to the Nigerian people and the international community that the Labour Party is forging ahead with renewed purpose and direction,” Abure declared. “Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed has been chosen as the party’s standard-bearer for the 2027 presidential election.”
The announcement marks a pivotal moment for the Labour Party as it seeks to reposition itself ahead of the 2027 polls.
