Vice President Kashim Shettima will head Nigeria’s delegation to the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Saturday.
He will be accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, alongside other ministers and senior government officials.
According to the ministry, Nigeria’s participation will focus on global debates around peace, security, development, climate change, and other urgent international concerns. The country’s agenda will be anchored on priorities such as economic growth, peace and security, human rights, humanitarian assistance, international law, disarmament, and cooperation against terrorism and organised crime.
Vice President Shettima is scheduled to address the General Assembly on 24 September, presenting Nigeria’s national statement on its role in global peace, regional stability, and climate action.
Nigeria will also take part in several high-level side events, including the International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine, a roundtable on energy and security in the Gulf of Guinea, and the Forward Africa Leaders Symposium on digital transformation and AfCFTA digital trade.
This year’s UNGA, themed “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights”, underscores international commitment to cooperation, inclusivity, and shared solutions.
