The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the appointment of Dr Aminu Yusuf from Niger State as the new Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), marking a significant step in the country’s preparations for its next national census.
The confirmation followed the adoption of the report presented by the Senate Committee on National Identity and Population. Lawmakers unanimously approved Yusuf’s appointment during Tuesday’s plenary session, praising his academic credentials and extensive experience in demography and public administration.
Dr Yusuf is expected to bring renewed focus and leadership to the NPC at a time when accurate population data is crucial for national planning, resource allocation, and development policy.
In his remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasised the importance of a credible and technology-driven population census, adding that the incoming chairman would be instrumental in restoring public confidence in Nigeria’s demographic data.
The National Population Commission, established by law, is responsible for conducting censuses, surveys, and population-related research, as well as maintaining the civil registration system in Nigeria.
Stakeholders have welcomed Yusuf’s confirmation, expressing hope that his leadership will fast-track the long-delayed national census and enhance coordination with state and local governments, especially in rural and hard-to-reach communities.
Dr Yusuf is expected to officially assume office in the coming days, with an inaugural briefing anticipated to outline his vision for the Commission and the timeline for key population initiatives.
