Saudi Arabia has released three Nigerian women who were arrested for possession of cocaine, following high-level diplomatic engagements between the Nigerian government and Saudi authorities.
The women, identified as Hadiza Abba, Fatima Malah, and Fatima Gamboi, were detained in March 2024 at Prince Mohammad bin Abdul Azeez International Airport in Madinah, Saudi Arabia. They were held for 10 months on suspicion of abetting the trafficking of cocaine found in the possession of two other Nigerian nationals.
The release of the women was achieved after prolonged diplomatic and legal efforts, culminating in their discharge and acquittal. They were handed over to the Consulate-General of Nigeria in Jedda, where they are currently awaiting immigration processes for their return to Nigeria.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nigeria expressed gratitude for the successful release of the women and emphasized the importance of diplomatic efforts in resolving such cases. The women will soon reunite with their families in Nigeria.
