Benin Republic head coach Gernot Rohr has fired up his players ahead of two crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, describing the upcoming fixtures against Rwanda and Nigeria as the most important games in the country’s football history.
The Cheetahs currently lead Group C of the African qualifiers and will face Rwanda’s Wasps on Friday at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, before locking horns with the Super Eagles of Nigeria in Uyo on October 14.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Rohr who once managed Nigeria emphasised the significance of the fixtures for Benin’s hopes of reaching their first-ever World Cup finals.
“These matches against Rwanda and Nigeria are the two most important matches in the history of Benin, I think,” Rohr said. “The players are aware of that.”
The German tactician has been working to instil belief, organisation, and discipline in the Cheetahs’ camp, building on their strong run in the qualifiers.
Benin made a bold statement earlier this year when they stunned the Super Eagles 2-1 in June 2024 Nigeria’s only defeat so far in the qualification campaign. Despite taking an early lead through Raphael Onyedika, the three-time African champions were undone by a spirited Benin comeback in Abidjan.
Rohr, who coached Nigeria between 2016 and 2021, has repeatedly praised his side’s determination but warned that focus will be key as they chase a historic ticket to the global stage.
“We respect every opponent, but we know what is at stake. My players understand that these matches can change everything for Benin football,” he added.
The Cheetahs will be looking to consolidate their top spot in the group with back-to-back positive results, while the Super Eagles under new coach Eric Chelle will be desperate to reclaim control of their qualification hopes.
