Anambra State Governor, Charles Chukwuma Soludo, has said any politician pledging to serve just one term in office needs a psychiatric evaluation.
He made the comment at a rally in Anambra South on Saturday, where he formally declared his interest in seeking re-election.
“Anybody with a functioning brain should not say that. Do you think Nigerians are fools?” Soludo asked the crowd.
“You come and promise one term? That person should be taken to a psychiatric home. Something is not right mentally,” the governor said.
Soludo argued that the Constitution clearly allows elected public officials to serve two terms and questioned why anyone would commit to less, especially before the work even begins.
His remarks come weeks after Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, backed the idea of a six-year single tenure for presidents and governors. Makinde’s proposal, made during a media chat in Ibadan, was aimed at reducing distractions from re-election politics.
Also in July, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last election, told Channels TV he would willingly accept a one-term presidency in the interest of national unity and zoning.
Obi had said, “One term is enough to prove good governance is possible. If bad leaders can destroy things in two years, a serious leader can fix a lot in four.”
The former Anambra governor added, “I don’t need a day more than four years. I’ll show what focused leadership looks like.”
Soludo, however, dismissed such pledges as either dishonest or unserious, calling them political stunts that insult voters’ intelligence.
