A 40-year-old patient, Ahmed Usman, is set to face trial for allegedly assaulting a medical doctor, Fatima Umar Gamsa, at the General Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital in Damaturu, Yobe State. The incident, which occurred during a routine consultation, has led to criminal charges and Usman’s remand at the Potiskum Correctional Centre.
The case, confirmed by the Chairman of the Association of Resident Doctors in Yobe, Dr. Umar Aji, is scheduled for hearing at the Chief Magistrate Court 1 in Damaturu on August 19. Dr. Aji stated that the association had reported the assault to the police and is now awaiting the court’s ruling.
Details of the incident indicate that Usman had been scheduled for a review with Dr. Gamsa, but when his name was called, he was not present. As the doctor moved on to the next patient, Usman reportedly became frustrated. In an unsettling turn of events, after the day’s work, Usman returned to the hospital, armed with a tree branch, and assaulted Dr. Gamsa.
Hospital security swiftly intervened to defuse the situation, and the assault was immediately reported to the police. Usman was arrested and is awaiting trial. He is currently in custody at Potiskum Correctional Centre until the hearing date.
A hospital staff member, who spoke anonymously, explained that Usman’s initial absence had led to his agitation, which culminated in the violent outburst. Dr. Gamsa, who is recovering from the incident, is currently on bed rest. Efforts to reach her for comment were unsuccessful.
