The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has clarified that no inmate granted presidential pardon under the latest exercise of the prerogative of mercy has yet been released.
In an official statement on Thursday, Fagbemi explained that the process is still undergoing final administrative and legal checks to ensure full compliance with the law.
“The process remains at the final administrative stage, which includes a standard review to ensure all names and recommendations fully comply with legal and procedural requirements before any instrument of release is issued,” the statement read.
He added that after approval by the Council of State, the last stage involves issuing the formal instrument of release — a step that allows for one final verification before transmission to the Controller-General of Corrections.
The Attorney General stressed that this verification is a routine part of the process and reflects the government’s commitment to due diligence and transparency.
“There is no delay in the process; it is simply following the law to the letter to ensure that only those duly qualified benefit from the President’s mercy.”
Fagbemi also thanked members of the public for their vigilance and engagement, saying it demonstrated a collective interest in justice and accountability.
The public will be informed once the process is concluded, he assured, adding: “The rule of law does not rush; it ensures fairness.”
