The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a comprehensive three-day weather forecast, effective from Monday, 21 July, to Wednesday, 23 July 2025, predicting thunderstorms and rainfall of varying intensities across Nigeria’s northern, central, and southern regions. The forecast, disseminated via NiMet’s official X platform, highlights the likelihood of unsettled weather conditions, including moderate to heavy rainfall and strong winds, which may precede precipitation, particularly in thunderstorm-prone areas.
Northern Region Forecast
On Monday, early morning thunderstorms with rainfall are expected in parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Kaduna states. The region will experience predominantly sunny skies with patches of cloud, transitioning to thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in the afternoon and evening across Adamawa, Taraba, Kebbi, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Yobe. On Tuesday, morning thunderstorms are forecast for Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Taraba, with further storms and rainfall expected later in Yobe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Bauchi, Borno, and Kebbi. By Wednesday, similar conditions are anticipated, with morning thunderstorms and rain in Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Taraba, followed by additional storms in Yobe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Borno, and Kebbi.
Central Region Forecast
The central states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, Niger, and Kwara, will experience cloudy mornings on Monday, with thunderstorms and light rainfall forecast for Plateau, Benue, and Nasarawa. Moderate rainfall is expected in the afternoon and evening across Plateau, Niger, the FCT, and Nasarawa. On Tuesday, cloudy conditions will persist in the morning, with moderate rainfall forecast for the afternoon and evening in the FCT, Plateau, Niger, and Kwara. On Wednesday, the region is expected to follow a similar pattern, with cloudy mornings and moderate rainfall later in the day.
Southern Region Forecast
In the southern region, cloudy mornings are forecast throughout the three-day period. On Monday, early showers are expected in Akwa Ibom and Cross River, expanding to moderate rainfall in the afternoon and evening across Ondo, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Edo, Rivers, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa. On Tuesday, morning showers are anticipated in Enugu, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, followed by moderate to heavy rainfall in Ebonyi, Abia, Edo, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom during the afternoon and evening. Wednesday is expected to bring similar conditions, with cloudy mornings and moderate to heavy rainfall later in the day.
Safety and Advisory Information
NiMet has cautioned that strong winds may precede rainfall, particularly in areas susceptible to thunderstorms, posing risks of falling branches and other hazards. The agency advises the public to secure loose objects, avoid driving during heavy rainfall, disconnect electrical appliances during storms, and steer clear of tall trees to minimise the risk of injury. Airline operators are encouraged to consult airport-specific weather reports for effective flight planning.
