The South East Senate Caucus has bemoaned the recent explosion of fuel tankers in Niger and Enugu States, expressing sadness that Nigerians are being roasted on the nation’s roads due to avoidable accidents.
The group through its leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, said the unfortunate incidents had become one too many.
The Caucus position was contained in a statement to the media on Sunday in Abuja.
In the statement, the Southeast Senate caucus while expressing shock and sorrow over the multiple deaths caused by a fallen petrol tanker in Ugwu Onyema in Enugu on Saturday, recalled a similar occurrence in Niger State last weekend where more than 60 lives were lost, and properties worth millions destroyed.
Abaribe, according to the statement said, the group was “pained that innocent people, particularly road users, are now frequently caught up in an accident that smacks of total neglect of the nation’s highways by traffic managers.”
This is as he called on the relevant authorities to deploy immediately to nip future occurrences in the bud.
“It is high time the traffic managers step up their game. The frequency of these accidents now constitutes a total embarrassment to the country. We can’t continue losing our people this way”, the statement added.
“It is sorrowful and very unfortunate that we are losing many of our people in these avoidable accidents,” Abaribe stated. “The frequency of these explosions constitutes a total embarrassment to the country.”
The statement recalled the devastating incident in Niger State last week, where over 60 lives were lost.
The Caucus extended its condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Enugu State.
