A presidential hopeful under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ada Kate Uchegbu, has called for a paradigm shift in Nigeria’s political leadership, declaring that the country is overdue for a female president.
Uchegbu, a journalist-turned-politician, made the declaration in a statement issued on Thursday, expressing deep concern over what she described as decades of unproductive, male-dominated governance that has left Nigerians grappling with insecurity, unemployment, hunger, and hopelessness.
She said, “Decades of male-dominated leadership have left the country trapped in insecurity, hunger, unemployment, and despair. It is time for a nurturing and visionary leadership style that only a woman’s heart can deliver.”
According to her, the political and economic challenges facing Nigeria can only be addressed through fresh and inclusive leadership. Uchegbu urged major political parties, including the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC), to give women the opportunity to lead the country in the forthcoming 2027 general elections.
“Nigeria deserves a fresh deal for the country to become better. African women are among capable leaders in the world. Nigeria’s political culture will change forever if a woman emerges as the country’s president,” she stated.
Uchegbu maintained that the continuous recycling of leaders had hindered progress and development. She described her decision to contest as a call to service and a generational shift both in age and mindset.
“Nigeria is at a breaking point. We have recycled leaders and expected different results. It hasn’t worked. I am stepping in because we need a generational shift in both age and mindset,” she said.
Speaking further, she urged voters, especially in Anambra State, to prioritise competence and integrity over financial inducements or the influence of political godfathers.
“Anambra must vote for competence, not cash or political godfathers. This election is a chance to set the tone for credible governance nationwide,” Uchegbu emphasised.
She also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure transparency and protect voters from intimidation during the electoral process.
“INEC must guarantee transparency, protect voters from intimidation, and choose leaders who can build, not those who only campaign,” she added.
