The family of Peter Rufai, the revered former Super Eagles goalkeeper, has disclosed the funeral arrangements following his passing on 3 July at the age of 61 after a prolonged illness. Rufai, affectionately known as Dodo Mayana, leaves behind a legacy as one of Nigeria’s most celebrated football icons.
According to a statement shared on social media by veteran sports journalist Mumini Alao, and signed by Sunny Bruce Rufai on behalf of the family, the burial events will commence on Thursday, 21 August, with a service of songs and a public presentation of his biography in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos. This heartfelt gathering is intended to honour his life beyond the football field.
The funeral Mass will take place on Friday, 22 August, at 10:00 a.m. at the Catholic Church of Visitation, First Avenue, Festac Town. Interment will follow immediately afterwards at Ikoyi Cemetery. The series of rites will culminate with a Thanksgiving service scheduled for Sunday, 24 August, at the same church in Festac Town.
Rufai’s influence on Nigerian football was profound. He proudly guarded Nigeria’s goalposts at the FIFA World Cups in 1994 and 1998, playing a pivotal role as the Super Eagles reached the Round of 16 on both occasions. His haul of achievements also includes earning silver medals during the Africa Cup of Nations in 1984 and 1988 before finally lifting the coveted AFCON trophy in 1994.
His international debut came in December 1981, and over a distinguished 14-year career, Rufai showcased his talent not only on home soil but also across European leagues in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. After retirement, he remained committed to nurturing the next generation of Nigerian footballers, notably serving briefly as the coordinator of the nation’s U23 team.
