Former Speaker Hon. Yakubu Dogara has faced backlash from social media users in the Northern region following his remarks at a town hall meeting for Christian leaders in Northern Nigeria. Dogara, during the event themed “Church and Society: Tax Reforms and Matters Arising,” emphasized that the region remains impoverished due to its leaders’ failure to invest in meaningful projects.
In his speech, Dogara stated, “We are all northerners, and it should be made clear that President Tinubu or the South is not our problem; they have not come to cheat the North. That is out of the question. Some are claiming that Yoruba people are getting appointments, but let’s reflect. We ruled this country for over 40 years when northerners were in power. What did we achieve? The North remains the same, impoverished by our own leaders.”
His comments sparked a flurry of reactions online. Umar Yusuf commented on Facebook, “You cannot exempt yourself just to please someone. Tell us your own contribution as a former speaker.” Another user, Yakubu Uba Suleiman, questioned, “Why criticize Northern leaders? As a former speaker, you are also a leader!”
R Ken Mikairu suggested ulterior motives, writing, “He’s looking for vice president to Tinubu against the 2027 General election.” Mikairu further speculated, “Is Dogara not part of the North too? Let me tell you, Dogara is fighting for his personal interest because he is looking for vice president to Tinubu against 2027.”
In contrast, YZ Zakka supported Dogara’s viewpoint, declaring, “Yes, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara is right. The North is its own enemy, not Tinubu or the South.”
Sir Ismail Audu expressed skepticism about Dogara’s position, stating, “Dogara knows his position in the North; he is like an outcast in the northern part where he comes from. We are not surprised; if you are not with us, we understand. By 2027, Insha Allah, everywhere will go Marama, I swear.”
These diverse reactions highlight the ongoing debate about leadership and development challenges facing Northern Nigeria.
