Anambra State has emerged as the highest-performing state in the South East region in the 2024 National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), according to a regional performance ranking released by the Anambra Government on Monday.
The ranking, which analyzed candidates’ results state-by-state, showed that Anambra led in the number of students who obtained five credits and above, including Mathematics and English. The state recorded 20,053 candidates meeting this benchmark, representing 18.69 percent of all exam takers in the region.
This performance surpassed other South East states: Imo (17.92%), Enugu (17.13%), Ebonyi (10.05%), and Abia (8.44%).
In total, the South East registered 108,104 candidates, with 77,491 passing with five credits and above, yielding a regional success rate of 72.23 percent.
The Anambra Government emphasized its commitment to academic integrity, stating on its official Facebook page, Anambra First, that it has “maintained an almost zero tolerance for exam malpractice and has completely eliminated so-called magic centres.”
Nationally, Abia State led all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with 95.84 percent of candidates scoring five credits and above in any subject combination. It was closely followed by Imo (94.50%), Ogun (94.35%), and Osun (93.46%).
Anambra ranked 14th nationwide, with 89.86 percent of its 29,053 candidates achieving five credits and above.
Other notable performers included Cross River (92.67%), Kogi (92.25%), and Lagos (91.74%).
On the other hand, the lowest-performing states were Kano (71.35%), Sokoto (70.95%), and Katsina (68.74%). Kano had the highest number of candidates at 147,264 but with a relatively low pass rate.
Kebbi State, one of the smallest in terms of candidates (5,433), recorded a pass rate of 89.24 percent.
The Anambra Government reiterated its firm stance against examination malpractice as a key factor in its students’ strong showing in the 2024 NECO SSCE.
