The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has firmly denied rumours of an attempted coup against President Bola Tinubu, branding the reports as entirely false, dangerous, and designed to sow unnecessary fear and mistrust among the public.
In a statement issued by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, the DHQ clarified that the cancellation of the 65th Independence Day parade was due to President Tinubu’s participation in a key bilateral meeting abroad. It also allowed military personnel to stay focused on ongoing operations against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.
“The attention of the Defence Headquarters has been drawn to a false and misleading online report suggesting that the cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary events was linked to an alleged military coup attempt,” the statement read.
“It also referenced, without basis, the recent announcement regarding the arrest of sixteen military officers currently under investigation for professional misconduct.”
The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) categorically dismissed the report, calling it “malicious” and aimed at stirring unnecessary tension. The DHQ reiterated that the ongoing investigation into the sixteen officers is a routine internal procedure to uphold discipline and professionalism within the ranks.
An investigative panel has already been established, and its findings will be made public in due course.
The statement urged Nigerians to disregard the disinformation being spread and to continue supporting the nation’s security forces. It also reaffirmed the military’s loyalty to the Constitution and to the democratically elected government led by President Tinubu.
“The Federal Government, the National Assembly, and the Judiciary are united in working for the safety, development, and well-being of the nation,” the DHQ added. “Democracy is here to stay.”
