A Nigerian lawyer has called for the immediate arrest of prominent Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, accusing him of openly supporting terrorism.
The legal practitioner alleged that Sheikh Gumi’s comments and activities amount to encouragement of insurgent groups and pose a serious threat to national security. He urged security agencies to investigate the cleric’s statements and bring him to justice if found culpable.
Sheikh Gumi, known for his outspoken views on negotiations with armed groups, has previously faced criticism for suggesting dialogue with bandits as a path to peace.
Authorities have yet to respond to the lawyer’s demand for action.
