Labour Party NEC rejects coalition talks, confirms Usman as interim chair.

ABUJA — The Labour Party (LP) has appointed former Minister of Finance, Senator Nenadi Usman, as its Interim National Chairman and formally dismissed any speculation that it will join a political coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The decisions were the result of a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Friday in Abuja, which brought together prominent party stakeholders. Attendees included Abia State Governor Alex Otti, his deputy Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, and the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero.
According to a communique issued after the meeting, the interim leadership, which also includes Senator Darlington Nwokocha as Interim National Secretary, was ratified following a Supreme Court judgment that affirmed the expiration of the tenure of the previous leadership under Barr. Julius Abure.
Addressing the NEC, Governor Otti stated that the interim leadership was necessary to rebuild the party and restore stability after months of internal conflicts. He also called on Abure and other disgruntled members to tender a formal apology as a condition for their reintegration into the party.
“All we are asking them to do is to write a letter of apology so that the interim leaders of the party can recall them for us to work with them,” Otti said.
On the issue of potential political alliances, the NEC clarified that the party is not involved in any coalition discussions and remains focused on strengthening its structures nationwide.
The communique also outlined key resolutions, including the approval of a detailed schedule for congresses at all levels to elect substantive officers. The party also reaffirmed its commitment to fielding credible candidates for the forthcoming Anambra gubernatorial election and various by-elections across the country.
