A commercial motorcycle operator, Adewale Jethro, was brutally killed on Wednesday night by a suspected armed robber who made away with his motorcycle after luring him to a secluded area in Kabba, Kogi State.
The tragic incident occurred along Best Way Road after the attacker, posing as a passenger, reportedly offered Jethro a higher-than-usual fare to transport him to a remote destination. What began as a routine ride turned deadly when the assailant allegedly used a machete to hack Jethro, leaving him fatally wounded before escaping with his bike.
Spokesperson of the Owe Titun Development Association, Emmanuel Olorunmaiye, issued a statement on Thursday condemning the murder, describing it as “a barbaric violation of human dignity” and a clear threat to the safety of the community.
“We strongly condemn this wicked and cowardly act,” the group stated. “We are calling on the security agencies, traditional rulers, elders, and all stakeholders to rise up now and take concrete steps to prevent further bloodshed in our land.”
The statement continued: “We can no longer remain silent while evil men steal lives and peace from our midst. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr Adewale Jethro. May God grant you strength and comfort during this painful time. As a platform committed to unity and safety, Owe Titun Development stands with you.”
Confirming the incident, spokesperson of the Kogi State Police Command, William Aya, said the crime was reported by the Divisional Police Officer in the area. Aya explained that the victim was likely persuaded by the suspect’s promise of higher pay.
“The Okada man agreed, probably because of the promise of a higher pay. On getting to a lonely place, the passenger macheted the bike man and vanished with the motorcycle,” Aya said.
According to him, the victim was rushed to the hospital for urgent care but succumbed to his injuries before help could arrive. His body has since been deposited at the mortuary.
Aya further disclosed that a full investigation has been launched, and the command is working to track down the suspect. He also cautioned other commercial motorcyclists to be vigilant, especially when approached by passengers requesting trips to isolated areas with unusually generous offers.
“The safety of riders is paramount,” he said. “Operators should avoid remote routes at odd hours and always notify someone of their movements.”
