The United States has warned it will revoke the visas of foreigners, including Nigerians, found celebrating the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Deputy Secretary of State Chris Landau issued the warning in a post on X on Thursday, condemning social media users who praised or trivialised Kirk’s killing at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.
“I have been disgusted to see some on social media praising, rationalising, or making light of the event, and have directed our consular officials to take appropriate action,” Mr Landau said.
He stressed that foreigners who glorify violence “are not welcome visitors” to the United States and urged the public to report such comments to the State Department.
“In light of yesterday’s horrific assassination of a leading political figure, I want to underscore that foreigners who glorify violence and hatred are not welcome visitors to our country,” he added.
The stern warning came as President Donald Trump announced that Kirk would be awarded a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom. Trump also confirmed on Friday that the suspected gunman had been arrested, 48 hours after the fatal shooting.
Kirk, 31, was a prominent conservative commentator and founder of Turning Point USA, known for mobilising young voters and championing right-wing causes. His killing has sparked outrage across the political divide and heightened tensions in an already polarised America.
