Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk, has been charged with aggravated murder as prosecutors announce they will seek the death penalty. The court hearing took place on Tuesday, 16th September 2025, with Robinson attending remotely from his jail cell in Provo, Utah.
Kirk, a prominent figure in conservative circles and the founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed at a campus event in Utah last week. The incident, which occurred in front of thousands of people, has left the political right in mourning and sparked intense debates about the growing divisions within American society.
Robinson is said to have fired a single bullet from a rooftop, striking Kirk in the neck. After a 33-hour manhunt, Robinson turned himself in following pressure from his parents, who had seen his photo in the media. At his court appearance, Robinson remained silent except to confirm his name, while the District Judge read out the charges against him.
Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray revealed that the decision to pursue the death penalty was made after a thorough review of the evidence and circumstances surrounding the crime. “I do not take this decision lightly,” Gray said, adding that the nature of the crime and the available evidence led him to file a notice of intent to seek the death penalty.

The case has drawn significant attention, especially due to the emotional nature of the crime. A key piece of evidence came from text message exchanges between Robinson and his roommate, who was described as “a biological male transitioning genders.” According to Gray, Robinson had been in a romantic relationship with the roommate, and the text messages provided insight into Robinson’s motives.
On the day of the murder, Robinson allegedly texted his roommate: “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.” When the roommate questioned him, Robinson reportedly responded, “I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.” These messages were deleted shortly after.
Kirk, known for his vocal conservative views, was particularly controversial for his strong stance against the transgender rights movement. His death has brought the issue of political polarization in the U.S. to the forefront, sparking discussions about how such divisions can lead to tragic outcomes.
In the wake of the killing, FBI Director Kash Patel faced criticism for mishandling the initial investigation, including the premature announcement of a suspect’s arrest. Additionally, one of the individuals initially arrested was later charged with unrelated crimes, further complicating the case.
The White House has also weighed in, with statements pointing to the rise of left-wing extremism in the aftermath of the shooting. This has raised concerns about potential government overreach in its efforts to address “domestic terrorism.”
