The upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier between Nigeria and Benin is set to be played under less-than-ideal circumstances for both teams, as they will be missing key players due to suspensions.
Benin’s coach, Gernot Rohr, confirmed that his side will be without midfielder Sessi d’Almeida and defender Yohan Roche. Both players received second yellow cards in Benin’s 1-0 victory over Rwanda last week, leaving the team shorthanded for the must-win match against the Super Eagles in Uyo. Rohr acknowledged that these suspensions were a blow but emphasized that Benin still holds its fate in the group.
“We have lost two players because of a second yellow card,” Rohr told journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, as posted on X. “But all is possible for the three teams (South Africa, Benin, and Nigeria). The decision is in our hands. This can be a little advantage. Big suspense until the end,” he added, highlighting the uncertainty and intensity of the situation.
On Nigeria’s side, the Super Eagles will also be without one of their most impactful players. Ademola Lookman will miss the game after receiving a second yellow card in the 64th minute of Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Lesotho on Friday. According to CAF’s one-match suspension rule for accumulating two yellow cards during the qualifiers, Lookman will be sidelined for this critical clash.
Despite the absence of such an important player, Nigeria’s head coach, Eric Chelle, downplayed the significance of Lookman’s suspension, focusing instead on the strength and depth of the squad. Chelle expressed confidence that the team would remain strong, with all players ready to step up.
“The team remains focused and confident,” Chelle said. “Lookman’s suspension is unfortunate, but we have enough depth to compete effectively. Every player must be mentally prepared to contribute, whether as a starter or substitute.”
He further assured that Lookman would continue to support the team off the pitch, from the bench and in the dressing room, as Nigeria seeks to secure crucial points that will keep their World Cup dreams alive.
The Super Eagles will face Benin at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Tuesday, with Nigeria currently sitting third in Group C, trailing behind both Benin and South Africa. This match is critical for Nigeria’s chances of qualification for the 2026 World Cup, as only a win will keep them in contention.
