Abuja, Nigeria – The immediate-past Deputy Governor of Kogi State, David Onoja, has publicly apologized to his predecessor, Simon Achuba, over his alleged role in Achuba’s impeachment. The apology was made during a visit to Achuba’s home in Abuja on Friday.
Onoja, who served as Chief of Staff to then-Governor Yahaya Bello, was appointed deputy governor after Achuba’s impeachment. Though the impeachment was later overturned by the courts, Achuba was not reinstated to his position before the end of Bello’s term.
In a statement posted on his verified Facebook page, Onoja denied orchestrating the impeachment, stating that the accusations were a “misconception.” He added that the visit was a “sacred moment of reuniting, of opening our hearts to forgiveness,” and a step towards healing and reconciliation.
“True leadership is not in holding grudges, but in building bridges, healing wounds, and moving forward with a spirit of love and unity,” Onoja wrote. He thanked Achuba for his “large heart, wise counsel, and warm hospitality,” and reaffirmed his commitment to the progress of Kogi State.
