The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, today, July 31st, 2025, hosted a high-powered delegation from the Senate Committee on Crude Oil Theft, led by its Chairman, Senator Ned Nwoko, at the IGP Smart Conference Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja. The meeting marks a significant step in Nigeria’s strategic efforts to curb onshore and offshore oil theft.
During the meeting, Senator Nwoko underscored the committee’s crucial mandate to end crude oil theft and help Nigeria meet its oil production targets. He emphasized that achieving this goal requires robust collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, acknowledging its critical role in combating the theft of the nation’s crude oil.
In response, IGP Egbetokun expressed profound appreciation for the Committee’s visit and their commitment to addressing this vital national issue. He reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s dedication to combating crude oil theft, protecting critical national infrastructure, and ensuring that perpetrators of this economic sabotage are brought to justice. The IGP assured the Committee of the Force’s readiness to implement robust measures and leverage all available resources to support their mandate.
He immediately directed the Deputy Inspectors-General of Police in charge of the Departments of Operation and Force Intelligence to work closely with the Committee.
IGP Reaffirms Commitment to Professionalism and Human Rights Protection, Receives NHRC Delegation
In a related development, the IGP also received a delegation from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), led by the Chairperson of its Governing Council, Dr. Salamatu Husaini Sulaiman, and Executive Secretary, Dr. Tony Ojukwu OFR, SAN. The discussion focused on deepening cooperation in human rights protection and police accountability, addressing human rights violations, and ensuring strict compliance with the Human Rights Act.
Dr. Tony Ojukwu OFR, SAN, commended the IGP for the effective handling of public complaints against erring officers and the swift disciplinary actions taken. He also lauded the commendation bestowed upon SP Sentome Obi as the Police Officer of the Year 2024, and other officers recognized for their positive impact on policing.
IGP Egbetokun expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the NHRC’s visit, highlighting the value the Force places on its partnership with the Commission. He stated that human rights training has been integrated into all police training institutions to ensure officers uphold human rights in line with best practices. The IGP affirmed that policing under his leadership prioritizes upholding human rights and actively discourages arbitrary arrests, excessive use of force, and unlawful detention. He concluded by stating that the Force is open to criticism and feedback, believing it will contribute to improving NPF operations.
