Afrobeats star Davido has revealed a surprising memory from his early music days, saying he once ran errands for Don Jazzy and D’Banj using his father’s Rolls Royce.
Speaking in a newly surfaced video clip, the Grammy-nominated singer said the encounters happened in Atlanta between 2007 and 2009, when the Mo’Hits duo visited his family home.
“In Atlanta, 2007 or 2008 or 2009… In my father’s house, I was freestyling for Don Jazzy and D’Banj. He sent me to go and buy McDonald’s with my papa car, Rolls Royce,” Davido said.
The video, which has gone viral, shows a visibly amused Davido laughing as he recalled the moment. He said those early interactions were part of his journey before breaking out on the Nigerian music scene.
Davido, born David Adeleke, is the son of billionaire businessman Adedeji Adeleke. He would later go on to achieve global fame with hits like Dami Duro, If, and Unavailable.
His comments have sparked reactions online, with fans noting the contrast between his humble beginnings in music and his current status as one of Africa’s biggest artistes.
The 31-year-old artist has often spoken about how he had to work twice as hard to earn respect in the industry despite his wealthy background.
Don Jazzy and D’Banj, who co-founded the now-defunct Mo’Hits Records, were among the top names in Nigerian music during that era. Their influence and success inspired a generation of musicians, including Davido.
The singer’s throwback moment comes just weeks after he headlined several sold-out shows abroad, reinforcing his place among the continent’s leading entertainers.
