The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) and retired Justice Alaba Omolaye-Ajileye have commended the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, for approving ₦20 million in compensation to Mrs Chineze Ozoadibe and five others wrongfully arrested.
HURIWA described the gesture, along with recent legal victories recorded by the DSS — including its court challenge to Prof. Pat Utomi’s shadow cabinet initiative and the case against African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore — as proof of the DG’s respect for due process and commitment to the rule of law.
On his part, Justice Omolaye-Ajileye praised Mr Ajayi’s leadership, accountability and respect for human rights. “The award of ₦20 million compensation demonstrates his dedication to rectifying mistakes, building public trust, and upholding justice. This sets a positive precedent for other security agencies,” he said.
HURIWA further noted that the DSS’s decision to seek judicial interpretation rather than resorting to arbitrary clampdowns marks “a refreshing departure” from past practices. The group urged the Service to codify its reforms, stressing that admitting mistakes and offering redress reflects true professionalism.
“The DSS has set a standard others must follow — safeguarding security without trampling on fundamental rights. If sustained, this culture will enhance professionalism, boost public confidence, and consolidate Nigeria’s democracy,” HURIWA concluded.
