Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has taken a decisive step towards deepening grassroots democracy, endorsing a landmark bill that seeks to grant full financial and administrative autonomy to all 44 local government councils in Kano State.
The governor threw his weight behind the proposal during the 31st Executive Council meeting at the Government House Annex in Kwankwasiyya City, where the council approved the transmission of the bill to the State House of Assembly for consideration.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, Governor Yusuf said the reform is designed to strengthen governance at the grassroots by allowing councils to control their own resources, implement projects without bureaucratic bottlenecks, and respond directly to the needs of their communities.
“This reform will enable councils to manage their resources effectively, execute projects promptly, and take decisions that reflect the priorities of the people they serve,” he said.
Governor Yusuf emphasised that local government autonomy is key to accountability, transparency, and sustainable development, describing the move as a vital stride in entrenching democracy in the state.
He expressed confidence that lawmakers in the State Assembly would rally behind the bill, noting that it is in the collective interest of the people of Kano.
