Ghana’s boxing community is in mourning as the National Sports Authority (NSA) has suspended all boxing activities following the tragic death of super-middleweight boxer Ernest “Bahubali” Akushey. The 32-year-old passed away on 23rd September 2025 at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, 11 days after sustaining severe injuries during a bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
This marks the second boxing-related fatality in Ghana within six months, intensifying concerns about athlete safety. In March, Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju also lost his life after a fight in Accra.
The NSA, in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, announced the immediate suspension, prioritising the safety of athletes. “The National Sports Authority (NSA), in consultation with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, has, with immediate effect, suspended all boxing activities in Ghana,” the authority stated. “This decision follows the tragic passing of professional boxer Ernest ‘Bahubali’ Akushey after his most recent bout. It reflects the joint commitment of the NSA and the Sports Ministry to prioritise the safety, health, and welfare of athletes.”
To address the crisis, the NSA revealed that a five-year safety and development plan has been finalised. The plan aims to overhaul medical, technical, and regulatory standards to align with global best practices. A nine-member Interim Management Committee will oversee its implementation.
“While the suspension may present immediate challenges, it remains a necessary step to protect lives, preserve the integrity of the sport, and secure its future,” the NSA added, referencing the committee established after Olanrewaju’s death.
Boxing holds a special place in Ghana, particularly in the Bukom community, which has produced global icons like Azumah Nelson. However, these recent tragedies have sparked urgent calls for stricter medical protocols, enhanced oversight, and robust safety measures to prevent further loss of life.
Authorities have assured stakeholders that efforts are ongoing to ensure boxing resumes under safer, more professional conditions that meet international standards.
