Benin Republic’s Head Coach Gernot Rohr has mapped out a strategic game plan ahead of the crucial World Cup qualifier match against Nigeria, set for Tuesday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. Despite the anticipated challenging atmosphere, Rohr remains confident his team will keep their composure and stick to their winning formula.
Benin Republic’s coach, Gernot Rohr, is no stranger to the pressure of facing Nigeria on home soil. Having previously managed the Super Eagles, Rohr led them to several victories at the same venue and now returns as the opposition coach for a World Cup qualifier match on Tuesday. Despite the hostile atmosphere he expects from the home crowd, Rohr is determined to ensure his side remains calm and focused.
Speaking exclusively to Goal, Rohr revealed that his team is prepared for the intensity of the clash but will remain level-headed to execute their tactical approach. “Yes, the atmosphere can obviously be hostile, but we will try to maintain a certain calm and serenity,” said the Franco-German tactician. “On the pitch, this will translate into a desire to play the game.”
Rohr emphasized that Benin’s strategy will be rooted in solid defence and quick counterattacks. He highlighted the importance of maintaining good possession of the ball and executing a disciplined defensive structure to weather the pressure from the Super Eagles. “We have a game based on good defence, with counterattacks. This is what we will want to practice in Uyo,” he stated.
Currently, Benin leads Group C with 17 points, ahead of South Africa on 15 points and Nigeria with 14 points. A draw in Uyo would be enough to keep the Cheetahs in control of their World Cup qualification and bring them closer to their historic first-ever appearance in the tournament.
The Cheetahs arrived in Uyo on Saturday after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Rwanda on Friday, which helped them maintain their lead at the top of the group. Rohr’s tactical approach, which revolves around discipline, patience, and quick transitions, has yielded impressive results in recent months.
However, the Benin coach will have to contend with two key absences in the form of midfielder Sessi d’Almeida and defender Yohan Roche, both of whom were suspended after receiving their second yellow cards in the match against Rwanda. While Rohr acknowledged the suspensions as a setback, he remains optimistic about his team’s ability to maintain control of their destiny in the qualification race.
Despite the challenges ahead, Rohr remains focused on ensuring his team sticks to their game plan in Uyo. “We still control our fate in the group. Despite the setbacks, the decision remains in our hands,” he concluded.
