Formed during the 2023 general election buildup, the G-5’s creation was largely driven by Nyesom Wike’s loss of the PDP presidential ticket to Atiku Abubakar in 2022. Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, and his allies sought to thwart Atiku’s candidacy, believing the party should have nominated a southern candidate for the 2023 presidential election.

Their efforts led to the removal of Iyorchia Ayu, the then-national chairman, who was perceived as supporting Atiku. Umar Damagum took over as acting National Chairman, but his position is now threatened by the current PDP governors, who aim to replace him. Notably, about four members of the PDP Governors’ Forum have expressed support for Damagum, deepening the party’s leadership crisis .
While details of the Thursday meeting remain scarce, it’s likely connected to the PDP governors’ resolution to remove Damagum. The G-5’s actions will undoubtedly shape the party’s future, influencing Nigeria’s political landscape.
