Premier League side Fulham is set to make a decisive call today on Nigerian attacker Philip Otele following close observation of his performance in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers between FC Basel and Copenhagen.
The 26-year-old winger, currently plying his trade with Swiss club Basel, has caught the eye of Fulham’s scouting team with his speed, dribbling prowess and goal-scoring flair. The club’s scouts were present to assess his display ahead of what could be a swift transfer before the summer window shuts in four days.
Born in Port Harcourt but raised in Europe, Otele has forged a career across multiple countries including Lithuania, Romania, Saudi Arabia and Switzerland. Known for his versatility, he can operate on either flank or upfront as a striker. Although yet to don the Super Eagles jersey at any level, a move to the Premier League could thrust him into national team reckoning.
Fulham’s interest forms part of their strategy to bolster attacking options under manager Marco Silva. However, competition for Otele’s signature is fierce, with Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt also reportedly keen.
Valued at approximately €4 million by Transfermarkt, Basel’s asking price is believed to be closer to €15 million, reflecting his importance to the Swiss side which secured the league and cup double last season with Otele’s key contributions.
If Fulham are impressed by his showing in the pivotal Champions League qualifier second leg, a prompt move is anticipated to secure the Nigerian forward’s services before the transfer deadline.
