In New York City, leftist candidate Zohran Mamdani was projected to win the mayoral race, according to major US networks including NBC, CBS, and CNN. The Democratic socialist and state assemblyman will make history as the city’s first Muslim mayor, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo in a landmark contest that highlighted a progressive surge within the Democratic Party.
Across New Jersey, Democratic Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill secured a notable victory in the gubernatorial race, US media reported. Meanwhile, in Virginia, Democrats also celebrated a milestone as Abigail Spanberger became the first woman elected governor of the state.
