The Federal Executive Council has approved contracts worth ₦987 billion for major upgrades across several Nigerian airports.
Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo briefed journalists after Thursday’s FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
“This is a massive investment in aviation infrastructure. The President has given aviation priority attention under the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund,” Keyamo said.
The largest chunk of the spending goes to Lagos. Terminal One of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport will be completely stripped down and rebuilt from the structural frame.
“We’re going back to the carcass,” Keyamo explained. “We’re replacing all the mechanical and electrical systems to meet global standards.”
The contract for this Lagos overhaul, worth ₦712.26 billion, was awarded to CCECC. The same company built Terminal Two, which will now be expanded with a new apron, access roads, and supporting infrastructure. The project is expected to take 22 months.
In Kano, the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport will get both runways and taxiways fully rehabilitated. Airfield lighting will be upgraded to Category 2 standard.
“This is a major safety improvement,” the Minister said. “With these CAT 2 navigational aids, planes can land even in hazy harmattan weather.”
The Kano project will cost ₦46.39 billion and is expected to be completed in 24 weeks.
In Lagos again, FEC approved a 14.6-kilometre perimeter fence to boost security. It will come with CCTV, solar-powered floodlights, intrusion alarms, and a dedicated patrol route. The security project is valued at nearly ₦50 billion and has a 24-month completion window.
Port Harcourt International Airport will also get a facelift. Runways and taxiways will be upgraded, and new Category 2 airfield lighting will be installed. This package will cost ₦42.14 billion.
Keyamo also announced that FEC approved the full business case for a 30-year concession of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu.
All the projects are to be funded entirely from the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund, which was created to support large-scale, strategic national infrastructure.
