The administration of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has been hit with a stinging accusation of widespread corruption from a former high-ranking official. Dr. Abdullahi Baffa Bichi, who served as Secretary to the Kano State Government (SSG) under the previous administration, has publicly alleged that the current government’s mismanagement and corruption far surpass that of former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who himself faced numerous corruption allegations during his eight-year tenure.
In a video that has rapidly circulated online, Bichi launched a scathing attack, stating, “All that we alleged Ganduje did wrong during his eight years, this government has done ten times over in just two years.” He went further, asserting, “We only suspected Ganduje, but for this one, we have evidence. They have committed ten times as much in less than two years.”
Bichi hinted at the potential for significant political upheaval, suggesting that the Yusuf administration might not even survive until the 2027 elections due to growing public dissatisfaction. He vowed to be at the forefront of efforts to expose the alleged malfeasance. “Let’s thank God, their days are numbered. We will chase them out, they might not even reach 2027. When we started talking, they will run away. Especially me, when I start going to the radio with evidence, they will run,” he declared.
The former SSG’s explosive allegations come on the heels of his recent defection, along with 14 others, to the All Progressives Congress (APC). They were reportedly warmly received by APC leaders at both the state and national levels.
Bichi’s departure from the Yusuf administration was marked by controversy. He was officially dismissed on health grounds, a reason that was met with considerable public skepticism. Speculation was rife that his removal was linked to his alleged role in fostering a rift between Governor Yusuf and his influential political godfather, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Prior to his dismissal, Bichi and a commissioner had been suspended by their former party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano, over accusations of disloyalty and abuse of power.
Responding to Bichi’s damning accusations, the Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, vehemently dismissed them as baseless and unsubstantiated. “Let him prove it if it’s true,” Waiya challenged.
The escalating war of words between the former top government official and the current administration is likely to intensify political tensions in Kano State as the 2027 elections draw closer.
