In a powerful call to action, Beatrice Eyong, UN Women Country Representative to Nigeria, declared that the “Special Seat for Women Bill” could be a game-changer for the nation’s sustainable development.
Speaking at the South-West Zonal Public Hearing on the 1999 Constitution Review in Lagos on Saturday, Eyong emphasized that passing the bill would propel Nigeria toward transformative growth and cement its status as Africa’s leader.
Eyong praised lawmakers and stakeholders for championing inclusive governance through the bill, which has garnered widespread support across Nigeria. “This isn’t just a women’s bill—it’s a Nigerian bill,” she said, urging the National Assembly to fast-track its passage. “If enacted, it will accelerate sustainable development and position Nigeria as the true giant of Africa.”
Highlighting Nigeria’s lag in women’s representation in decision-making, Eyong commended the relentless efforts of women, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders pushing for the bill’s success. She stressed that its passage would unlock unprecedented progress for the nation.
Echoing her sentiments, Kafilat Ogbara, Chair of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, called for guaranteed representation, including at least one woman per state in the Senate and increased female presence in the House of Representatives, including the FCT. “Women make up over half of Nigeria’s population. We are the nurturers, the backbone of our society—this is not too much to ask,” said Ogbara, who represents Kosofe Federal Constituency.
Veteran Nollywood actress Joke Silva added star power to the cause, advocating for strict adherence to the 35% affirmative action policy for women in elective and appointive roles. “More women in leadership means a stronger, better Nigeria,” Silva declared.
As Nigeria stands at a pivotal moment, the bill’s passage could redefine the nation’s trajectory, ensuring women’s voices shape a brighter, more inclusive future.
