The deepening rift within the Kano Emirate reached a new peak on Friday as both Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero, each claiming the title of Emir, held separate ceremonies to turban their chosen Galadiman Kano.
Sanusi II, presiding at the Kofar Kudu palace, installed Munir Sanusi Bayero as the new Galadiman Kano, alongside four other traditional titleholders. Simultaneously, at the Nassarawa Mini palace, Bayero turbaned Sunusi Lamido Ado Bayero for the same prestigious position.
The double turbaning follows the passing of Abbas Sanusi, the previous Galadiman Kano, and further underscores the escalating power struggle within the emirate.
Speaking at his ceremony, Sanusi II emphasized that the appointments were based on the individuals’ “track records and that of their families,” urging them to demonstrate “loyalty, humility and compassion to the common man.” Governor Abba Yusuf, state officials, and other dignitaries attended the Kofar Kudu event.
Bayero, in his parallel ceremony, similarly cited Sunusi Lamido Ado Bayero’s “track records, wealth of experience and contributions to the emirate” as the basis for his appointment.
The unprecedented dual turbanings have heightened tensions in Kano, highlighting the unresolved dispute over the rightful leadership of the emirate.
