The Emir of Daura, Alhaji Faruq Umar Faruq, has officially dethroned Iliya Mantau, the village head of Mantau in Yarmaulu, Baure Local Government Area of Katsina State, following allegations of kidnapping and rape.
The decision comes after widespread protests by youths in Yarmaulu, who accused the traditional leader and unnamed accomplices of abducting a woman, identified as Zulaihatu, and her infant child. Reports indicate that the perpetrators demanded a ransom of N20 million and allegedly raped the woman even after receiving the ransom.
The incident, which reportedly took place nearly a year ago, has been under judicial review but sparked public outrage due to perceived inaction by traditional authorities. Last week’s community-led protests compelled the Daura Emirate Council to reassess the case and take decisive action.
In a statement on Monday, Emir Faruq condemned the abuse, emphasizing that the Emirate will not tolerate any form of wrongdoing, especially by those in positions of authority.
“This Emirate has previously removed a traditional leader it appointed and even witnessed Sarki Abdurrahman imprison his own son over misconduct. We will never condone any abuse,” the Emir declared.
He reaffirmed that the Daura Emirate is committed to principles of fairness, justice, and accountability. “If anyone feels wronged, even if it involves my own child, they should come forward with their complaints. This is an Emirate of the people,” he said.
Emir Faruq also underscored that traditional rulers are not above the law and must be held accountable. Effective immediately, Iliya Mantau ceases to be the village head of Mantau. The Emirate will appoint a new leader committed to justice and moral responsibility.
This decisive move sends a clear message about the seriousness with which traditional institutions must uphold their custodial roles and protect the rights and dignity of their communities.
The Emir cautioned residents against spreading misinformation and encouraged the use of legal and traditional channels for addressing grievances, assuring that all voices will be heard.
The case highlights growing demands for accountability among Nigeria’s traditional leaders. As awareness and advocacy for human rights increase, local communities are more willing to speak out against injustices, even when the accused hold high-ranking positions.
Observers and civil society groups in Katsina have praised the Emir’s action as a positive example of leadership grounded in justice. They have also called on the government and Emirate to ensure that justice is fully realized through the judicial process.
