Prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has once again urged the Federal Government to open peace negotiations with bandits, insisting that dialogue remains the most viable path to achieving lasting security and stability in Nigeria.
Speaking on the current state of insecurity in parts of the North, Gumi argued that the government must adopt a pragmatic approach that prioritises peace talks over the continued use of military force. He said that meaningful engagement with those involved in banditry could help address the root causes of the crisis and pave the way for national reconciliation.
Drawing parallels with the Israel–Hamas peace efforts, Gumi noted that even deeply rooted conflicts can be resolved when both sides commit to dialogue. He maintained that Nigeria’s security challenges require a similar spirit of negotiation and compromise.
“The Federal Government should not shy away from dialogue. Every conflict, no matter how violent, eventually ends at the negotiating table. What we need is sincerity, justice, and a willingness to listen,” he stated.
The cleric, who has long advocated for dialogue as a tool for conflict resolution, criticised the persistent reliance on military operations, describing them as costly and ineffective in ending the cycle of violence.
He further urged religious leaders, traditional rulers, and community heads to support peaceful engagement efforts, saying that inclusive dialogue would help reintegrate repentant bandits and restore normalcy to affected communities.
“Our farmers, traders, and children have suffered enough. It is time for peace. The government must take bold steps to bring everyone to the table,” Gumi added.
Sheikh Gumi’s renewed call comes amid rising concerns over continued attacks and abductions in parts of the North-West and North-Central regions. While his position has sparked mixed reactions in the past, the cleric maintains that dialogue, if pursued with sincerity, remains Nigeria’s best chance for enduring peace.
