A Federal High Court has directed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its National Chairman to proceed with the party’s much-anticipated national convention without further delay.
The ruling, delivered on Tuesday, effectively clears the path for the opposition party to convene its top decision-making gathering, aimed at addressing internal disputes and charting a new strategic course ahead of upcoming elections.
In its judgment, the court dismissed applications seeking to halt the convention, stressing that political parties must adhere to their constitutions and democratic principles. The presiding judge emphasised that delaying the convention would undermine the party’s unity and internal democracy.
Party insiders say the decision has been welcomed by key stakeholders who view the convention as crucial to repositioning the PDP and strengthening its leadership structure.
Following the ruling, the PDP leadership is expected to announce a definitive date and venue for the convention in the coming days, signalling renewed momentum within Nigeria’s leading opposition party.
