Domestic workers at the Daura home of late former President Muhammadu Buhari say the void left since his passing “feels like a world of emptiness.”
Buhari, who died on 13 July 2025 at the age of 82 in a London hospital, was laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State. Widely known for his humility and personal touch, the former president is being remembered not only as a national leader but also as a friend and guardian to those in his service.
One worker, who asked not to be named, told The Observers Times: “Our late boss was more than our employer, he was a guardian and a close friend to us and our families. This one month with the thought of his no return has indeed shown a cool world of emptiness around here.”
Another staff member recalled Buhari’s personal involvement in their lives, saying: “He would attend our naming ceremonies or come to our homes for condolences, staying for hours to offer comfort and prayers without thinking of his status. We have lost a friend, mentor, and employer. His presence brought us pride.”
A visit to the residence on Wednesday revealed a neatly kept gravesite within the compound, decorated in green and white the colours of Nigeria’s flag. The bustling atmosphere that once surrounded the property has given way to quiet streets, with only light security on duty compared to the heavy presence during his burial.
A source close to the family confirmed that preparations were underway for the 40-day prayer ceremony, expected to attract a large crowd. “After Baba’s burial and the relocation of his family to Kaduna, the area has been quiet. Insha Allah, in the next 10 days, the family will return for the prayers,” the source said.
Residents of Daura also shared warm memories. Mohammed Ibrahim described Buhari as “a well-cultured, humble, and disciplined individual” who valued punctuality, upheld daily prayers, and treated everyone with respect.
The 40-day prayer will mark another moment for friends, family, and admirers to gather in remembrance of a man many here say was “not just a president, but a people’s person.”
