President Bola Tinubu has appointed Opeyemi Agbaje, a distinguished financial expert and former Assistant General Manager at Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), as the new Chairman of the National Pension Commission (PenCom). The announcement, made on Monday, August 18, 2025, follows a seven-day ultimatum from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), signaling the administration’s commitment to addressing critical national issues.
Agbaje brings an impressive four decades of expertise in law, banking, and finance to the role. A former Executive Director at Metropolitan Bank, he is widely respected as a visionary leader in business, economics, and policy. His academic credentials are equally robust: a Law degree from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1985, admission to the Nigerian Bar in 1986, a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from the University of Lagos in 1989, and an MBA from IESE Business School in Spain in 1997. Agbaje is also nearing completion of a Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) from Eaton Business School.
