The Benue State Government has launched drone surveillance technology to strengthen security around rural communities and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.
James Iorpuu, Executive Secretary of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA), announced the move during the unveiling of the state’s new electronic emergency management platform. He explained that the drones would provide real-time images and video updates from locations affected by violence, displacement, or natural disasters.
“This is a turning point for how we respond to emergencies in Benue,” Iorpuu said. “With support from Benue Digital Infrastructure Company PLC, we now have the capacity to monitor events on the ground as they happen.”
He added that the digital platform will not only enhance response time but also ensure transparency and accountability in how aid is delivered. According to him, residents, diaspora communities, humanitarian partners, and concerned stakeholders will be able to follow updates through official government channels.
“This system is designed for public trust,” Iorpuu said. “Any unofficial or politically driven information should be ignored. Our goal is to offer credible, real-time updates that guide effective humanitarian response and prevent panic.”
BSEMA also called on citizens to engage with the platform and report emergencies promptly through its digital tools. The agency said it hopes this new system will attract support from both local and international organisations.
“With this initiative, we’re placing Benue at the forefront of digital emergency management in Nigeria,” Iorpuu said. “It reflects the Digital Benue spirit modern, responsive, and community-driven.”
